Fable will be very British, and it will be released before The Elder Scrolls 6: Skyrim

Xbox's General Manager Phil Spencer appeared on the 500th edition of IGN's Unlocked podcast, leaving a trail of delectable breadcrumbs about some of the company's most-anticipated games in the route. One of them is Playground Games' revival of the Fable series, which he mentioned briefly when discussing Obsidian's Avowed. Playground Games is most known for the Forza Horizon series.

Avowed has been dubbed Obsidian's Skyrim killer since its announcement, but Spencer disagrees: "The games are quite different, so maybe I struggle a little bit to say that's our version of this: just knowing what Fergus [Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian] and the team are going off to do, "However, when I think about our lineup and that more core fantasy RPG scenario, I think Avowed will be an excellent entry."

"Fable has never been like that," Spencer adds. "I suppose I could say that Fable has always been a little more light-hearted and a little more British, and I hope Playground will keep it that way." Then he says we'll play it before another huge game: "Elder Scrolls 6 is a little further away, and I believe it'll be fantastic when it comes out."

Spencer came back to the Skyrim comparison at the end. "I think Avowed, simply from the standpoint of a basic fantasy-based RPG, will have some unique variances from what the Elder Scrolls has done in the past, because this one clearly takes place in the Pillars [of Eternity] world and whatnot, but sure..." Is that correct, Phil? Continue to do so (spoiler: he did not).

He usually plays Counter-Strike and Rocket League these days, and he's really excellent at one of them. He's also the author of a video game history book called A Brief History of Video Games.
